Great Artists from YesteryearWe've heard of the great artists in the Italian Renaissance, and yes, they are probably the more popular ones because they are taught in schools and universities. Names like these would probably ring a bell if spoken about. Masaccio 1401-1428, Leonardo da Vinci 1452-1519, Belini 1430-1516, Mantegna 1431-1506, Rapheal 1483-1520, Titian 1487-1576, Ghiberti 1378-1455, Donatello 1386-1466, Michaelangelo 1475-1564. Some of these names you would probably recognise from the Movie "The Turtles". I did have to see the humor in this. Or even if you think about "Zorro" The names like Mantegna and Donatello would ring a bell. So really the motion picture writers would be covering those artists and what they were famous for in their story lines. This is where we find that we become knowledgeable about the artists, but what happened to other artists in the same era but outside of Italy: Van Eyck 1390-1441, Bosch 1450-1516, Durer 1417-1528, Brueghel the Elder 1525/30-1569, Holbein the Younger 1497-1543 and El Greco 1541-1614. These are the artists that I'm going to cover briefly, to give you a little more knowledge about them and where they came from. They were all great artists in their own right and deserve the same recognition. Van Eyck 1390-1441
Jan Van Eyck was from Netherlands and he was one of Campin's followers in draughtsmanship. His strength in the artistic way was seeing the beauty around him. He used what was freely available to him in the way of nature and people. He had a natural talent for using oil paints where he made the colours glow like precious stones. In his "Arnolfini Wedding" (1434, National Gallery in London) the bride and groom appear to be in a domestic interior filled with disguised symbols in a pictorial marriage certificate. Brueghel the Elder 1525/30-1569 This page will follow shortly. Holbein the Younger 1497-1543 This page will follow shortly. El Greco 1541-1614 This page will follow shortly.
